Commission Application Information

Apply now!  Contact the Office of the City Clerk with questions about the commission application process or to pick-up an application. Commission applications are accepted at any time as vacancies occur throughout the year. Applications will remain on file for a period of two years from the date of application. Commissioners who wish to be reappointed, will need to reapply for their seat and will be considered in the same manner as all other applicants.

Consideration of your Application. Your application will be considered by the Mayor, for the commissions which you apply as vacancies occur, either through expiration of a member's term or when a member resigns.

Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. You may or may not be contacted by the Office of the Mayor to discuss your application prior to your name being forwarded to the City Council for confirmation.

Applicant names for a commission are published with the City Council agenda in the newspaper, and/or discussed at a City Council meeting; during a public forum the merits of your appointment may be discussed.

Confirmed applicants. Confirmed commissioners will be notified of their appointment by the City Clerk. Prior to participating in a commission meeting an Oath of Office for the term must be signed.

Commissioners must comply with Wasilla Municipal Code (WMC) Chapter 2.12, City Officers Generally, in regard to defining financial interest, substantial financial interest, and conflict of interest.

Terms. Commissioner terms are staggered and are for a period of three years. Terms expire on December 31, and new appointments begin on January 1. The only exception is when a commissioner resigns and a new commissioner is appointed to fill in the remainder of a term, or when a new commission is formed.

Visit WMC Chapter 2.44, which outlines general provisions for commissions of the City for more information.

Planning Commissioners. Only the Planning Commission has term limits; no person may serve on the Planning Commission for more than two consecutive, full terms without a break in service for at least one full year.

Also, in compliance with AS 39.50, Planning Commissioners must file an Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) Financial Disclosure Statement with the City Clerk, upon appointment, annually during their term, and within 90-days of leaving office. Contact the City Clerk with questions.
