Welcome to Wasilla!
Wasilla
is a progressive community in a spectacular natural setting that offers the best of Alaska to visitors and residents alike. A thriving crossroads with a booming economy, this rapidly growing city is the heart of a diverse and dynamic region. Wasilla is the commercial and retail center for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (approx. population 74,000) in Southcentral Alaska.
In Alaska terms, the size of Wasilla is simply perfect - large enough to offer metropolitan amenities and a blossoming growth center for business, yet small enough to preserve the charm, security, and quality of life that small-town living provides. With an active population of almost 6,500 Wasilla offers affordable land and housing; unparalleled recreation, a thriving economy, and a responsive local government committed to assisting private development.
Wasilla’s advantageous location along the George Parks Highway and the Alaska Railroad make it a strategic link between Anchorage and Fairbanks, the largest population centers and transportation hubs of Southcentral and Interior Alaska. With recent improvements to the Glenn and Parks highways the 50-minute commute between
Wasilla and Anchorage is manageable and scenic.
A year-round recreation paradise, Wasilla is the home of the world renowned Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and the Tesoro Iron-Dog 2000, the world's longest snowmobile race. Wasilla's residents and visitors enjoy many parks including “Iditapark” a 29 acre parcel that is home to Wonderland Park, a skateboard park, a BMX bike run area, a sand volleyball pit as well as basketball and tennis courts, the Veterans Honor Garden and the Garden of Reflection. This park is located one block off the Parks Highway on Weber and Nelson Drive.
The City of Wasilla opened the doors to its newest facility, the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex on March 6, 2004. This facility is the premier indoor sports complex in the State of Alaska. The Multi-Use Sports Complex is a 102,000 square foot building with four primary activity areas. There is an NHL size ice arena, an indoor artificial turf court, a running/walking track, and three community meeting rooms. The Sports Complex is also the home of the Alaska Avalanche, the area's Junior A hockey team which competes on a national level.
Wasilla hosts many tournaments for soccer, softball and wrestling at our recreational areas and has miles of trails for your enjoyment. Additionally, fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, and biking are popular activities during summer's long daylight hours, and mountains, lakes, streams, wetlands, tundra, and boreal forests are within easy reach.
I thank our local businesses, our schools, our churches, our public servants, and especially Wasilla residents, for building this wonderful city!
Sincerely,
Mayor Dianne M. Keller
